The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther Harkey, Jr., 91, husband of Lucille Clark Wayland Harkey, of Brookdale of Anderson, Anderson, SC, died Friday, August 4, 2017, at the Rainey Hospice House.

Dr. Harkey was a descendant of the original settlers of Mecklenburg County, NC, and was raised in Charlotte, NC. He was the son of the late Martin Luther Harkey, one of the founders of Harkey Nurseries, and of Anne Bell Isenhour Harkey of Concord, NC.

Dr. Harkey served in WW II in the USNR in the V-5 and V-12 programs and received a commission (CEC) in the Seabees.

Dr. Harkey was an engineering graduate of the University of Virginia and served 13 years as District Engineer for The General Electric Co. in the Carolinas and Florida. He later graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary and San Francisco Theological Seminary with a doctorate (STD) in Sacred Theology. Dr. Harkey served pastorates at The Decatur Presbyterian Church in Decatur, GA, The Pasadena Presbyterian Church in St. Petersburg, FL and The Central Presbyterian Church in Anderson, SC. After 31 years as pastor, in retirement he served interim pastorates at The First Presbyterian Church in Clinton, SC, also the Presbyterian Churches in the SC Communities of Abbeville, Liberty, Pelzer, Midway and Roberts. He most recently was Parish Associate at The Central Presbyterian Church in Anderson, SC for nine years.

Dr. Harkey is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lu Wayland Harkey of China Missionary parents, a son, Rev. Dr. Martin L. (Luke) Harkey III and wife Carolyn of Shelby, NC, a daughter Dr. Rosanne H. Pruitt and husband Dr. John C. Pruitt of Anderson, SC and a son Wayland Harkey and wife Mary Beth of Alpharetta, GA; six grandchildren, Rob Harkey and wife, Amy of Raleigh, NC, Anna Harkey of Spartanburg, SC, Crayton Pruitt of Anderson, SC, Martin Pruitt of Charlotte, NC, Joshua Harkey of Alpharetta, GA and Alex Harkey and wife, Angela of Alpharetta, GA; and four great grandchildren, Eric, Atlee, Fisher, and Scarlett.

Dr. Harkey was a member and past moderator of the Foothills and Tampa Bay Presbyteries, and past president of The Anderson Kiwanis Club. He has also served on the Boards of The YMCA, Habitat for Humanity, and The Presbyterian Historical Foundation. He had been active in the AIEE, IES, The Coast Guard Auxiliary, The Horizon Bass Club, Young Life, Cursillo, Via De Christo, Walk to Emmaus, and the Philatelic Society. He was an Eagle Scout and an honorary member of The Pawnee Indians.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 10, at The Central Presbyterian Church, 1404 North Boulevard, Anderson, SC conducted by Rev. Noelle Henry Read. The family will receive friends following the service. A private interment will be held at the Roberts Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

The family respectfully suggests that flowers be omitted and memorials be given to the Theological Education Scholarship Fund of The Central Presbyterian Church, 1404 North Boulevard, Anderson, SC 29621 or to The Haven of Rest, P.O. Box 466, Anderson, SC 29622.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all friends of the family for the outpouring of prayers, support and genuine love and care for all related and touched by the blessed life of Dr. Martin L. Harkey.
