SUSAN P. RUSHTON

JUNE 23, 1956 – SEPTEMBER 11, 2009
 
PENDLETON, SC – Susan Sarah Pruitt Rushton, age 53, of 110 Pruitt Street, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2009, at her home. Born in Anderson County on June 23, 1956, she was a daughter of the late Roy Pruitt and Myrtis Tollison Pruitt.  Mrs. Rushton received a Bachelors of Arts Degree from Southern Wesleyan University and was an Administrative Assistant to the Registrar of Clemson University.  She was a member of Pendleton United Methodist Church and was a lifelong musician.
 
Survivors include her husband, Stephen T. Rushton of the home; children: a daughter, Stephanie Rushton of Beaufort, SC; a son, Geoffrey Rushton and wife, Jessica of Pendleton, SC; a grandson, Wesley Rushton, also of Pendleton, SC; and one sister, Nelwyn P. Landreth of Anderson, SC. The Funeral Service will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, September 13, 2009, at Pendleton United Methodist Church conducted by the Reverend Ben Barnett. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
 
The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6 pm until 8 pm on Saturday, September 12, 2009. The family will be at their respective homes. It is suggested that memorials be made to the Pendleton United Methodist Church, Post Office Box 646, Pendleton, SC 29670, or to the Susan Pruitt Rushton Endowment, c/o Southern Wesleyan University, Post Office Box 1020, Central, SC 29630.

LARRY McCLELLAN

ANDERSON – James Larry McClellan, 71, of 314 Lazy Street, husband of Patricia Parker McClellan, died Thursday, September 10, 2009 at his home. Born December 5, 1937 in Anderson, SC, he was the son of the late Calhoun and Martha Erskine McClellan. He served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Mr. McClellan was a retired Commercial Pilot. He was a former resident of Greenville and Charlotte. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Pat, of the home; three sons, Gene Roger McClellan of Rock Hill, James Allan McClellan of Richburg, and Jerry Anthony McClellan of Jacksonville, FL; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren; brother, Terry McClellan of Anderson, and a sister, Ann Brown of Athens, GA. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Donna Jean McClellan.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, conducted by Dr. Jack Couch. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3 p.m. Saturday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the home. MARY L. HOPKINS

OCTOBER 31, 1910 – SEPTEMBER 10, 2009
 
ANDERSON, SC – Mary Lankford Hopkins, age 98, of 406 Long Forest Circle, Anderson, died on Thursday morning at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson. Mary Hopkins was born on October 31, 1910, in Sikeston, Missouri to Joe and Gertrude Lankford.  She was married to the late Harold Hopkins, her husband of nearly fifty years.  She lived in Chaffee, Missouri nearly all her life before moving to Anderson in 1997.  She was blessed with nearly 99 years of life before her death at the Rainey Hospice House on September 10, 2009.  She is a member of Concord Baptist Church in Anderson.
 
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Leslie and Kenneth Lankford.  She is survived by two sons and their spouses, Jae and Akiko Hopkins of San Diego, California and Mark and Ruth Hopkins of Anderson, SC.  Mrs. Hopkins had five grandchildren: Amy Hopkins of Atlanta, GA, Sara Bopp, Joe Hopkins, and Andy Hopkins of Simpsonville, SC, Steve Hopkins of Warwick, RI, and ten great grandchildren.
 
Mary Hopkins was a teacher in Missouri for almost forty years and, also, was a well-known musician who traveled with the 140th Infantry Band as a soloist in her youth.  She taught English and directed choirs and play productions for most of her professional life.  She also taught the Senior Women’s Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church in Chaffee, Missouri, for many years – a class that was previously taught by her Mother.  She often said that her greatest pride was in her sons, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren.  She was a sixth decade member of the PEO and was an avid Bridge player.
 
In more recent years, she was most appreciative of her many friends here in Anderson who walked with her daily at the Anderson Mall and her Sunday School Class friends at Concord Baptist Church. A Memorial Service will be held at 7:30 pm on Friday, September 11, 2009, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. Don Cox officiating.  Visitation for the family will occur preceding the service from 6:30 pm until 7:30 pm.  Interment will be near Chaffee, Missouri, where Mrs. Hopkins lived most of her life.
 
The family will be at the residence, 406 Long Forest Circle, Anderson.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Music Ministry of Concord Baptist Church, 1012 Concord Road, Anderson, SC 29621, or to Hospice of The Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621. ROBERT L. CHAMBLEE, PhD

MAY 31, 1923 – SEPTEMBER 8, 2009
 
ANDERSON, SC – Robert L. Chamblee, PhD, age 86, longtime resident of New York City, passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at NHC Healthcare of Anderson. Born in Starr, SC, on May 31, 1923, he was a son of the late Reeves Chamblee and Minnie Bond Chamblee.  He was a United States Army Veteran where he attained the rank of First Lieutenant while serving in France from 1950 – 1952.
 
Additionally, he was educated in Iva, South Carolina, did undergraduate work at the University of South Carolina, and received other degrees from Columbia University in New York.  Dr. Chamblee was a retired professor, having taught at Columbia University and Baruch College, both in New York.  During his teaching profession, he taught Communication, Business Communication, English, Marketing and Management.  Also, he was a Promotion Writer for CBS Television Network, an Advertising Copywriter for Fuller, Smith, & Ross, Inc., and McCaffrey & McCall, two of the world’s largest advertising agencies.  He produced countless articles and publications in his field of expertise as well as even writing a screenplay for Warner Bros. Studio in Hollywood, California. Dr. Chamblee was highly decorated for his professional accomplishments; he was a recipient for numerous awards, namely receiving the Fosdick Readership Award countless times, the Starch-Intra-Hooper Award, the Fragrance Foundation Award for Excellence in Fragrance Advertising, and a Certificate of Merit for the Art Director’s Club of New York Award for placing second in a the 1970 CBS Network Competition for the best television broadcast promotion.  He was a member of the American Academy of Advertising and the Public Relations Society of America.
 
Survivors include his sisters, Lizzie C. Thompson of Anderson, Jean C. Blackwell of Greenville, Betty C. Rogers of Fork; and a brother, Dwain “Whit” Chamblee of Starr.  Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. His parents and siblings predeceased him, Reba C. Geer, William Chamblee, Reeves Chamblee, Jr., and Jess Chamblee.
 
A Graveside Service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, September 10, 2009, at the Starr Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Reverend Dr. James R. Thomason.    The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the service. Mrs. Mallie Clinkscales Hadden

Belton S.C. - Mrs. Mallie Clinkscales Hadden age 82, died Monday September 7, 2009. She was born in Anderson County and was the daughter of the late Sylvester Clinkscales, and Buelah Richardson Clinkscales. She was the wife of the late John Hadden, and a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.  Survivors include one sister Ida C. Johnson. Brother Fleet L. Clinkscales. One grandson William A. (Sharon) Hadden Jr., and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 12:00 P.M. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 7:00-7:30P.M. at the funeral home.  Holloway’s Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements. The family is at 203 A. East Union Dr., Belton SC.

CATHERINE B. HENDRICKS

June 11, 1921 – September 7, 2009
 
ANDERSON, SC - Catherine Odell Burdette Lowe Hendricks, age 88, of Anderson, SC, died Monday, September 7, 2009 at Willow Creek Living Center in Iva, SC. Born in Iva, SC, she was a daughter of the late George Washington Burdette and Eula Mae McMahan Burdette and was a graduate of Iva High School.  During Catherine and Rev. Hendricks’ membership at Eureka Baptist Church, they were involved in the missions of the church.  They helped in the founding of Old Fields Baptist Church in Moorefield, West Virginia, where he served as their first pastor.  Also they served as pastor at Valley River Baptist Church, Andrews, NC, and the Cherokee Baptist Church, Cherokee, NC.  Catherine was a member of the First Baptist Church of Anderson.
 
She is survived by her children: son, Michael John Lowe and his wife, Sandra Owens Lowe and their daughter, Leah-Lane Lowe and her husband, Damon Hege; daughter, Patricia Lane Lowe Whitfield and her husband, Stanley and their daughter, Crystal Whitfield, their son, Richard Whitfield and his wife, Tammy and their children, Hannah and Amanda Taylor and Jonathan Sutherland; step-daughter, Sandi Hendricks Clark and her son, Jeff Duncan; step-son, Cliff Hendricks and his children, Latasha, Jeremy and Joey ; step-daughter, Sharon Trotter and her children, Andy, Matt and Leslie; step-son, the late Steve Hendricks and his children, Mike and Josh; sister, Ruth Ellen Burdette Cash Neely and her husband, Kirk Neely and their son, Bruce Cash and his wife, Kitty, and a niece, Karen Paige Gillespie and her husband, Charles.
 
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, John Clayton Lowe and her second husband, Rev. J. D. Hendricks; daughter, Theresa Ann Lowe; step-son, Steve Hendricks; sisters, Mary Louise Burdette Paige and Miriam Geraldine Burdette. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, September 11, 2009 at 3:30 pm at Old Silver Brook Cemetery officiated by the Reverend Dr. James R. Thomason.
 
The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The family will be at the home of her son, Michael Lowe, 511 Jackson Road, Anderson, SC. ANDERSON, SC – Phyllis Patricia Evans, age 68, of 259 Nixon Street, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2009, at the AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Anderson, on December 5, 1940, she was a daughter of the late A.H. “Buck” Hanks and Merrie Lou Barkley Breazeale.  Mrs. Evans was a commercial artist.
 
Survivors include her daughter, Lori Miller and husband, Kevin Powell of Anderson; brother, Larry Hanks of Anderson; and Brenda King of Anderson; three grandchildren: Jeremy Miller, Haley Miller, and Codi Miller; and a great grandchild: Jaden Coe. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Michael Evans; and a brother, Donnie Hanks.

Mrs. Vera Mae Henderson

Belton SC  - Mrs. Vera Mae Henderson age 80, of Belton S.C. died Friday Sept 4, 2009 at the AnMed Health Medical Center. She was born in Anderson County and was the daughter of the late Grady Arnold and Lois Arnold. A member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She was married to the late Robert Henderson. Survivors include one brother Calvin Arnold.  Daughter/Niece Annette Cobb Breazeale. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3:00 P.M. at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family is at 1508 Grove Rd. Belton. Holloway’s Funeral Home is in Charge of arrangements.

REV. JAMES W. TERRY, JR.

Aug. 22, 1919 – Sept. 5, 2009
INMAN, SC - Reverend James Walter Terry, Jr., age 90, husband of the late Inez Harris Terry, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009 at Regional Hospice Home in Spartanburg. Born in Iva, SC on August 22, 1919, he was a son of the late James Walter Terry, Sr., and Bessie Manning Terry. He was a United States Army World War II veteran and entered the ministry in 1947.  He was an ordained Bishop of the Church of God and served 18 churches in South Carolina and one in New Mexico.  He was superintendent and served on the board for the Church of God Home for Children.  He also served on the State Evangelism and State Ministerial  Boards. Rev. Terry was a member of Praise Cathedral Church of God in Greer.
 
Survivors include his daughter, Emily Terry Hatchell and her husband, Franklin Hatchell, Sr., of Campobello, son, James Edwin Terry and his wife, Murphy of Norman, OK; four grandchildren, Angela Huerta, F. Lanier Hatchell, Jr., Chris Patterson and Rev. James Hatchell; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Ellen Darling of San Bruno, CA and half-brother, J. C. Terry of Starr.
 
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his step-mother, Ludie Terry; brothers, Waymon, Jake and Charles Terry; sisters Callie Mae Hicks and Marie Kilgore Smith; half-brothers, Floyd and Melvin Terry; half-sisters, Edna Carey, Caro Reynolds, Nettie Terry and Louise Terry and a granddaughter, Sherry Ann Terry. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 12:00 Noon in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Dr. Leon Parker, Rev. James Shealy and Rev. Bobby Johnson.  Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.  Reverend Terry’s nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.

CARL B. DUNCAN, JR.

OCTOBER 11, 1924 – SEPTEMBER 5, 2009
HARTWELL, GA – Carl Benjamin Duncan, Jr., age 84, resident of Hartwell Health Care Center passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2009. Born in Hartwell, GA, on October 11, 1924, he was a son of the late Carl B. Duncan, Sr., and Vera Cleveland Duncan.  He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II.  Mr. Duncan retired from Flowers Bakery Company and was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Temple.
 
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Gail McLane Duncan; son: Frank Duncan and wife, Julie of Bailey, NC; daughters: Angela Osborne and husband, Eddie of Anderson, Carla Polson and husband, Dereck of Greer, Dori Marcovechio and husband, Tony of Bluffton, and Gwen Elmore and husband, Charles of Virginia Beach; grandchildren: Heather, Josh, Cory, Jordan, Ben, Zachary, Jared, and Madeline; and sisters: Joyce Thomas and Effie Fernalin.
 
The Funeral Service will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Sam Duncan.  Interment with Military Honors will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. STARR, SC -Mary Ann Dennis Baker, age 56, of 116 Green Valley Road, died Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the Rainey Hospice House. Born in Newberry, SC on September 14, 1952, Ann was the daughter of the late Henry Ross Dennis and Edith Constance Taylor Dennis.  She was a 1970 graduate of T. L. Hanna High School and a graduate of Forrest College.  She was an administrative assistant at Anderson County Housing Authority and had also worked for Hampshire Designers for many years.  She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
 
Survivors include her daughters, Sonya Baker and Kristi B. Hughes and her husband, Grady of Starr; brothers, Richard Dennis and his wife, Donna and John Dennis of Anderson; a granddaughter, Mackenzie Hughes; niece, Lindsay Oliver and great-nephew, Devon Dennis. he Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by Chaplain Don Owens.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

CALVIN L. MARTIN

BELTON, SC – Calvin Leon Martin, age 84, resident of Belton, SC, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2009, at the Rainey Hospice House. Born in Belton, SC, on February 20, 1925, he was a son of the late William Samuel Martin and Auzlee Osley Martin.  He was a United States Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II.  Mr. Martin retired from General Electric in Greenville and was a member of the Belton Church of God.
 
Survivors include his children: Carol M. Church and husband, Randy of Belton, Donnie Martin and wife, Cleo of Columbia, Eddy D. Martin of Belton, and Cheryll Martin of Burke, VA.   Also surviving are seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Mae Hopkins Martin; and two brothers, Herman Hugh Martin and W.S. Martin, Jr.
 
The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 2 pm until 3:30 pm on Tuesday, September 8, 2009.  The Funeral Service will follow at 4 pm in the Mausoleum Chapel of Forest Lawn Memorial Park.  Dr. J. Charles Smith will conduct the service.  Following the service, the Campbell Patriot Honor Guard will provide Military Honors.
