<div class="content">
<p>Born in Shelby, NC, he was a son of the late Paul Hicks and Madge Aline Mitcham Abernathy.</p>
<p>Mayor Abernathy served for a total of 32 years in city government for the City of Clemson having served for four years on council prior to being elected Mayor in 1984. During his tenure as mayor, both the City of Clemson and Clemson University have had significant growth and yet through his leadership, the city has maintained it's village quality as well as forged cooperation with Clemson University to help enrich the lives of both citizens and students alike. He was a 1969 graduate of Clemson University where he also earned his Master's Degree. He also served as Director of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission for both Oconee and Anderson Counties as well as being Visiting Professor of Counselor Education and Clinical/Mental Health in the College of Health Education and Human Development at Clemson University. He was a member of University Lutheran Church.</p>
<p>Surviving are his wife, Jo Ann Davis Abernathy of the home; daughter, Dana Simpson and husband, Tim of Clemson; son, Ben Abernathy and wife, Nicky of Atlanta, GA; and grandchildren, Blake Simpson, Tyler Simpson, Chase Abernathy and Cody Abernathy.</p>
<p>In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Danny Abernathy.</p>
<p>Memorial services will be 2 PM, Thursday at First Baptist Church of Clemson.</p>
<p>The family will receive friends following the service at the church.</p>

<p class="p4"><span class="s1">ANDERSON, SC &ndash; Jerry William Coe, age 67, of 125 Wentzky Road, passed away at his residence, Saturday, February 11, 2012.&nbsp; He was a son of the late Henry David Coe and Lillian Gray Coe. &nbsp; He retired after 40 years of service from Clark Schwebel and was a member of Crosshill Church of God.&nbsp; In addition to being an avid gardener, Mr. Coe&rsquo;s passion was loving his wife, children and grandchildren. &nbsp;</span></p>
<p class="p4"><span class="s1">He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Karen Hart Coe; sons, Jeff Coe, Jeremy Coe both of Anderson and Travis Coe of the home; daughters, Sandy Coe Barbare of Anderson, Michelle Coe Johnson of Greenwood, and Tonia Coe of Anderson; brothers, Tom and Sam Coe, of Anderson and David Coe of Easley; sisters, Juanita McCabe and Brenda Farmer of Anderson; 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson and his loving mother-in-law, which he helped care for, Mrs. Jo Hart. &nbsp;</span></p>
<p class="p4"><span class="s1">In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, J.D. and Isaiah Coe; a sister, Dorothy Alexander; and a grandson.</span></p>
<p class="p4"><span class="s1">The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 14 at 3:30 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, officiated by the Reverends John Christmas, Scott Kahler, and Sam Duncan. &nbsp; Interment will follow at South Lawn Memorial Gardens. &nbsp;</span></p>

<p class="p2">Loretta Campbell Greene, age 42, passed away at her home on Saturday, February 11, 2012 following a lengthy illness.&nbsp; Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Charles W. Campbell and Lois Bolt Campbell.</p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">Loretta was a homemaker and a mother who loved her children very much.&nbsp; She was of the Baptist faith. &nbsp;</span></p>
<p class="p4">Survivors include a son Zachary William Greene of Townville; two daughters Mindie McElveen and Paiten Alexis, both of the home; and her mother, Lois Bolt Campbell of the home.&nbsp; Survivors also include special friends, Courtney Floyd of Townville and Dillon Medlin of Anderson. &nbsp;</p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">A private service honoring the life of Loretta will be held at a later date.&nbsp; The family is at the residence , and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Monday, February 13, 2012, from 6 PM until 8 PM. &nbsp;</span></p>

Born in 1926 in Porterville, CA, she was married for 54 years to the late E. Loyd Shields who died in 2000. Services and burial will be held next weekend in Fresno, CA.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Marian was born and raised in California, spent 20 years in Las Vegas, NV supporting her husband who worked for Hughes Corporation as well as his other work as a church administrator. In 2001 she moved to Anderson to be closer to family. She fell in love with Anderson.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">She is survived by her daughters, Velma Martin and Ann Calandrino; her son, Louie Shields; four granddaughters and 10 great-grandchildren. A local Memorial Service will be held later this month.&nbsp;</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">John was born November 1, 1935 in Tobaccoville, Forsyth County, NC. He was the son of the late Fred and Myrtle Moore Shamel. He grew up and attended schools in Spencer, Rowan County, NC. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. John retired from the restaurant and food service industries. He was a lifelong follower of the Lutheran faith and a charter member of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 5 brothers and sisters. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley Shamel of the home; 2 daughters and son-in-laws, Deana and Tom Davenport of LaGrange, GA and Amanda and Tim Dutton of Piedmont, SC; 4 grandsons, Thomas "Rett" Everett Davenport, III, of Atlanta, GA,&nbsp; John Parker Davenport and Spencer Reed Davenport both of LaGrange, GA and Michael Hobbs Dutton of Piedmont, SC and many other relatives and friends.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Funeral service will be held on Monday at 2pm at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church with Pastor Howard Jones officiating. A private burial will follow at M. J. <p class="p2">Pauline &ldquo;Polly&rdquo; Evans of 223 E. Benson Street, died at her home on Friday, February 10, 2012.&nbsp; She was born in Anderson County, a daughter of the late Vernon and Annie Elizabeth Clinkscales Carver.&nbsp; Polly was married to the late Donald Ray Evans.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">Mrs. Evans was a spinner at West Point Pepperell for quite a few years, and she was of the Baptist Faith.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">Survivors include 2 sons, Paul Dale Davis and Mark Davis of Anderson; 2 daughters, Joyce Glenn (Alan) of Townville and Darlene Davis of Anderson;&nbsp; 2 brothers, Curt Carver (Jean) of Iva, and Stanley Carver of Highlands, NC; sisters, Shirley Ann Burdette of Anderson, Cammie J. Carver of Iva, and Delores Starrett&nbsp; (Randall) of Hartwell, Ga.&nbsp; Polly is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.&nbsp; Polly is also survived by a special friend, Tonya Ashworth of Anderson.</span></p>

<p class="p2">ANDERSON, SC -&nbsp;Jean Davis Kirkhart, age 71, of 1823 Middleton Road and wife of Lantie Kirkhart passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at AnMed Health Medical Center.</p>
<p class="p4">Born in Anderson, SC, Jean was a daughter to the late Melvin Earl Davis and Hazel Elizabeth Evans Davis.&nbsp; She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker.&nbsp; She was a faithful member of Riverside Baptist Church where she volunteered with various groups of the church.</p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">Jean is survived by her husband, Lantie; her children, Billy Lewis Hickson, Jr. and his wife, Theresa of Orangeburg, SC, Karen Elizabeth Britt of Cape Coral FL, and Michele Denise Jones and her husband, Greg of Matthews, NC; her grandchildren, Billy Lewis &ldquo;Tripp&rdquo; Hickson, III, Jesse Hickson West, Annie Hickson Garvin, Zachary Davis Britt and Nicole Ramsey Jones; great-granddaughter, Kearsen Hannah West; step-children, Tracy Kirkhart and her fianc&eacute;, Chris Grant, Stacy Parr and her husband, Jon, and Lanny Kirkhart; brothers, Melvin Douglas Davis and Donald Lee Davis; and a sister, Christy Davis Black.</span>&nbsp;</p>

<p class="p2">Horace Eldridge Curlis, Jr., age 76, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2012, after a valiant battle against cancer, with his wife of 58 years, Barbara, at his side. Born September 29, 1935, in Richmond, Virginia, he was the son of the late Horace Eldridge Curlis, Sr. and the late Virginia Ware Curlis. &nbsp;</p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">&nbsp;A graduate of the College of William and Mary, Mr. Curlis was a chemical engineer and consultant in the capacitor industry at factories around the world.&nbsp; &nbsp; Mr. Curlis co-owned the Curlis Company, a gift and bridal shop, on-the-square in Pendleton with his wife, Barbara, for 30 years. He loved his family and genealogy, and was a past Governor of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in South Carolina.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">Mr. Curlis was survived by his wife, Barbara Dale Wright Curlis; sons, H.E. &ldquo;Ridgie&rdquo; Curlis, III, and his wife Alice of Pendleton, SC, and David Curlis and his wife Anne of Huntersville, NC;&nbsp; a daughter, Suzanne Curlis&nbsp; of Huntsville, AL;&nbsp; a sister, Mary East of Forest, Virginia;&nbsp; a brother-in-law, Al Hott of Mustang, OK. Mr. Curlis was also survived by six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, four nieces and four nephews.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">In addition to his parents, Eldridge was predeceased by a sister, Isabelle Phillips.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">A graveside service honoring the life of Mr. Curlis will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at Memory Gardens, Clemson, SC. The body will lie in state at The McDougald Funeral home.&nbsp; The family will receive friends at the home of Barbara and Eldridge, 108 Nottingham Way, Anderson, immediately following the service. &nbsp;</span></p>

<p class="p3"><span class="s1">Born in Barnwell, SC on December 7, 1944, he was the son of the late Warren Douglas Peeples and Alice Long Peeples.&nbsp; Mr. Peeples was formerly employed with Lakeside Mobile Homes and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.</span></p>
<p class="p2">He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Gloria Creech Peeples; sons,&nbsp; Billy Douglas Peeples and his wife, Ashley, and Jimmy Jason Peeples; granddaughters,&nbsp; Hannah and Brittney Peeples; sister, Jewel Childs and her husband, Tony; nephew, Larry Craft;&nbsp; nieces, Barbara Craft and Mary Alice Lollis.</p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Billy Hammond Peeples who died in the line of duty while serving in Vietnam.&nbsp;</span></p>
