Lakeside Named Magnet School

Lakeside Middle School will soon be Lakeside Middle School of Inquiry and Innovation.

The District Five Board of Trustees unanimously approved this week the proposal to make Lakeside a magnet school focusing on STEM studies, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The change will take place at the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year.

What does the change mean for Lakeside students?

“Becoming a STEM school will allow us to offer our students additional classes in Gateway to Technology and will redesign our technology and related arts classes,” said Lakeside Principal Martha Hanwell.

“Students will be able to choose electives which include video production, game design, graphic design, digital photography as well as band, chorus and strings,” she said. “Our core academic classes will include more technology, inquiry activities, and projects that are real world and relevant to students.”

Lakeside will continue to offer accelerated classes in math and ELA, and will add Gifted and Talented Math. Beginning next year in sixth grade, gifted and talented science classes will have an accelerated curriculum that will allow students to take Honors Physical Science in eighth grade for high school credit.

Lakeside students will also develop an electronic portfolio of their achievements in all grades. During their eighth grade year students will present this portfolio to their parents and teachers as a demonstration of what they have accomplished in middle school.

The school will also accept magnet students from other school zones as space permits. Admissions criteria and applications for Lakeside will be available at the District Five Magnet School Fair, scheduled for Thursday, February 24th from 6-8 p.m. at T.L. Hanna High School. Applications will be available online on February 25th.
