"Honoring Our Loved Ones" 2nd Annual Banquet April 29
Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 9:49PM

The second annual Honoring Our Loved Ones  banquet recognizing people who are living with cancer as well as the deceased will be held Friday, April 29 at 7 p.m. at Welfare Baptist Church. Proceeds from the sale of tickets and silent and live auctions will go to two local charities, the Cancer Association of Anderson and Hospice of the Upstate, according to Shirley Davis, who is organizing the event sponsored by the Linda Geer Charity Fund.

Tickets cost $15 for adults. They may be purchased from the Cancer Association, 215 E. Calhoun Street, and Welfare Baptist Church, 2106 Bolt Drive, Belton. They are also available from Mrs. Davis by calling 353-3186 or Charlie Wiley by calling 314-0414. Checks should be made payable to the Linda Geer Charity Fund.

Linda Geer, who died of ovarian cancer in 2009, was the matriarch of a large family of siblings, nieces and nephews, though she never married or had children herself. Her mother died when Miss Geer’s youngest sibling was eight, and she stepped in to help her father raise the younger children. Later in life, she worked with mentally handicapped adults, continuing to care for others.

“We want to honor all community members stricken with cancer, both those who have survived and those who have not,” said Mrs. Davis. A visual presentation of pictures of loved ones who have had cancer is being prepared to show at the banquet, and pictures may be submitted by e-mailing them to lindageercharityfund@yahoo.com.

The menu at the banquet includes roasted chicken breast, rice pilaf, tossed salad, green beans and rolls, with cake for dessert. The program will include singer Elizabeth Anderson and a demonstration by students of Enoch’s Karate School.

One of the big draws of the evening will be the auctions. Items donated include a refrigerator with brushed metal door given by Electrolux, a queen size mattress set from C and S Furniture Outlet in Belton, gift certificates at area restaurants and jewelry. Payment may be made in cash for pick-up that night, or by check or credit card (with a small surcharge) for pick-up the following week.
