Members of the Anderson V Career Campus FCCLA, recently participated in STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) while attending Family, Career and Community Leaders of America’s (FCCLA) 2011 State Leadership Conference at the Radisson Hotel and Convention Center in Columbia, SC March 24th-26th. More than 200 members from across the state attended the meeting.  Members receiving a gold medal will represent our state in STAR Events at the national meeting to be held in July, in Anaheim, California.

Catherine Payne, a junior at TL Hanna and current President of the local chapter, received a Gold medal in Clothing Construction, one of 22 national STAR Events available to FCCLA students. Catherine also competed for state office and was elected Vice-President.

“Catherine is the first Anderson V student elected as a state FCCLA officer during the past 20 years,” said FCCLA Advisor Sarah Jordan. “We are very excited that Catherine will be representing Anderson V at the national convention this summer.”

Brittany Dixon, and Ciara Jones, both juniors from TL Hanna High School, earned a Gold medal in the STAR Event, Promote and Publicize FCCLA.  In order to place in this event, students had to compile a notebook that successfully demonstrated their work to promote FCCLA to the general public and attract new members. Anderson County Public Information Officer Angela Stringer was a tremendous support to the students in their endeavor. She provided volunteer opportunities that allowed the girls to share information about FCCLA within the community. The girls also created a web page for the local chapter and contributed news items regarding their projects for the County’s web page and Facebook page with Ms. Stringer’s guidance. The will both be attending the National FCCLA Conference this summer to compete with their project.

“It was truly a pleasure to work with the FCCLA students and their advisors,” said Stringer. “They provided a valuable service to the County by helping with projects such as the 263d AAMDC Job Fair, the Veteran’s Day Parade, the Animal Shelter “Doggie Diva” and the Soldier Care Boxes projects. These students are energetic and enthusiastic about community involvement, which is refreshing. I look forward to a continuing relationship with Anderson V’s FCCLA students. ”
The Interior Design STAR Event team was made up of Aurelia Mance, a senior, and Kirsten Parent, a junior, both from Westside High School.  Using the skills acquired in their Interior Design class, they earned a silver medal by completing a floor plan, elevation drawing, budget, and display board of furniture, while following a design scenario for a garage renovation and garden living space.  They were given a great amount of support and information from Hampton Furniture Store, who donated time, money, and furniture to the school in the past and is a great supporter of our program.

FCCLA advisors for the Anderson V Career Campus are Ms. Sarah Jordan, Fashion and Interior Design Instructor, and Mrs. Jenny O’Brien, Culinary Arts Instructor.  Ms. Jordan will accompany Catherine Payne, Ciara Jones, and Brittany Dixon to the National Conference in July.

FCCLA’s STAR Events are based on the belief that every student is a winner. Competition, evaluation, and recognition all stress cooperation as the basis of success. Both youth and adults work together to manage the events and serve as evaluators of the participants.

Throughout the year, FCCLA members tackle issues such as teen violence prevention, traffic safety, family issues, career exploration, and much more. FCCLA programs and competitions enrich student learning, improve self-esteem, and serve students with a range of ability levels, economic situations, and cultural influences.
