Deadline for Southwood Arts School Application May 20

Student applications for the new Southwood Academy of the Arts are due by Friday, May 20th. Rising sixth graders (current fifth graders who will be moving to the sixth grade) are invited to apply to this new magnet school.

The applications are available on the District Five Website at Applications should be printed, filled out and returned to any District Five school.

If you do not have access to a printer and need a paper copy of an application, please contact the school.  Likewise, school leaders can help you with any questions or concerns about the application process.

Beginning in August 2011, the current Southwood Middle School will become Southwood Academy of the Arts: A Creative and Performing Arts School. Current Midway Principal Gary Bruhjell has been named Principal of the new school. Rick Mascaro, Director of the Anderson V Career Campus, will be the Director of Secondary Visual and Performing Arts for Southwood.

The school will open at the start of the 2011-2012 school year with a sixth grade only and plans to add a seventh grade level in the second year of operation and an eighth grade level in the third year. The number of secondary arts courses and other related courses will also expand over time
Southwood will eventually become a magnet school for students in grades six through twelve, with an emphasis in grades six through eight on academics within an arts-based curriculum. The secondary grades will receive performance-based instruction, beginning in the 2011-2012 school year with selected secondary courses, including accelerated classes in visual arts, drama music and dance.

Most students at the current Southwood Middle School will move to the new Robert Anderson Middle School at the start of the 2011-2012 school year.
