The Westside High School U.S. Army Junior ROTC participated in the 2011 Army JROTC Academic Bowl Championship at George Mason University in Washington, D.C., from June 24 to June 28.

The team consisted of Cadet Captain Trista Adams, Cadet Second Lieutenants Callie Alcott,  Naomi Plummer, and Calvin Ruinard.  In two online rounds, 1,316 teams were tested on standard high school curriculum math, science, and English.  The Westside team finished in the top 24 of the Academic Bowl teams to make it to the final round.  Despite some heavy competition in Washington, Westside made it to the quarter finals and finished 7th out of the nation’s top Army JROTC units.

After the competition, the cadets were taken on a tour of Washington where they visited some of the capitol’s monuments and memorials.  On the last night of the event, at an awards ceremony and banquet, the team members received the George C. Marshall Foundation Leadership and Academic Award.
