Habitat Upcycle Challenge & Auction Set for May 18

The second annual Upcycle Challenge & Auction, hosted by Habitat for Humanity of Anderson County, will be held May 18 at 7 p.m. at Earle Street Kitchen & Bar in downtown Anderson.

The event is schedule to feature 20 local artists using materials from the Habitat ReStore to make upcycled art that will be auctioned off throughout the evening. Artists are given a $75 store credit to get any items from the ReStore. Items created last year included a dog bed made from an old console television, a portrait of Janis Joplin made from vinyl records, a Clemson paw hand cut from plywood, and a portable gardening table from a vintage ironing board.

Upcycling is taking an item that is no longer needed or wanted and giving it new life as something that is either useful or creative. With that in mind, the goal of the show is to highlight how much stuff can be saved from landfills by donating and repurposing, to broaden the network of ReStore shoppers and donors, to connect the ReStore with Habitat’s mission of affordable housing and to raise funds for that mission.

Tickets are on sale online ( or at the ReStore, 210 S. Murray Ave., Anderson. Tickets are on sale for $25, but the price will increase at the start of May. Hors-d'oeuvres will be served throughout the evening and are free with a ticket. There also will be live music from L.C. Branch and a cash bar will be available.

Last year the event was a silent auction. This year, pieces will be auctioned through a silent and a live auction. Habitat’s goal is to raise $12,000 throughout the evening with all proceeds going directly to building decent, affordable homes. Additionally, Habitat is looking for a presenting sponsor for the event. The event is currently sponsored by TTI, Orian Rugs and Dave & Claudia Boles. Any organization wanting to get involved by sponsoring the event should contact Kylie Hebert at
