Bill to Stop Local Bans of Plastic Bags Heads to Senate

(AP) — A bill to stop local governments in South Carolina from banning plastic bags and foam containers is on its way to the state Senate floor.

The ban has little chance of passing in 2019 because it missed a key legislative deadline. But it likely means discussion of the ban will continue next year when the bill can be picked back up in the same spot.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the Senate Labor Commerce and Industry Committee voted 12-3 to approve the ban on single-use packaging.

The bill would cancel 15 local bans, mostly in coastal towns. The state's fourth largest city, Mount Pleasant, has a ban starting Tuesday.

Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey backs getting rid of the ban, saying the South Carolina needs consistent rules.
