Road Maintenance Fee Not on Council's Tuesday Agenda

Observer Reports

Anderson County Council will meet in executive session to discuss a new Sheriff's Department substation in Watson Village Shopping Center as part of Tuesday's regular meeting in at 6:30 p.m. in the historic courthouse downtown.

The road maintenance fee, which passed on first reading Sept. 3, is not on Tuesday's agenda. Council has countywide townhall meeting tonight in the historic courthouse at 6:30 p.m. to extend discussions on the issue. Council members have already held 15 meeting across the county to educate and allow public comment on the proposed fee which would be used exclusively for road maintenance/paving.

The county's 1,534 miles of roads have been underfunded for years, creating a crisis in funding for upkeep an maintenance. An estimated $8 million annually is needed to protect/repair the current road system.
