Saluting Our Natural Gas Utility Workers

By Brian Weisker

Energy companies will celebrate the 10th annual Natural Gas Utility Workers’ Day on March 18. On this day, we encourage our communities to join us in appreciating the hardworking men and women who keep natural gas service flowing safely and reliably to millions of homes and businesses throughout the United States.

As president of Piedmont Natural Gas, I continuously witness our hundreds of technicians, construction crews, operations teams and other natural gas workers go above and beyond to provide quality service to our customers in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Sometimes that means missing holidays or canceling plans at a moment’s notice to respond to an emergency, but that only speaks to the dedication and professionalism of our trained natural gas experts.

I’m proud to say that our employees’ commitment to quality customer service has not gone unnoticed by our customers – in December, Piedmont was named No. 1 in customer satisfaction with residential natural gas service in the South among large utilities for the third year in a row, according to the J.D. Power 2024 Gas Utility Residential Customer Satisfaction Study.

March 18 was named Natural Gas Utility Workers’ Day in honor of a 1937 incident in New London, Texas, that increased our industry’s emphasis on safety, including the widespread use of mercaptan to give natural gas its distinctive “rotten egg” smell. Safety is the No. 1 priority for Piedmont and our employees; we keep safety top of mind in everything we do so our customers can enjoy the benefits of natural gas service every day without worry.

Please join me in showing appreciation for these hardworking men and women in honor of Natural Gas Utility Workers’ Day.

Brian Weisker is president of Piedmont Natural Gas.
