City of Anderson to Look at Increasing Some Industrial Waste Fees
Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer
Anderson City Council will consider an increase to wastewater industrial pretreatment fees and hauling fees as part of Monday’s meeting at 6 p.m. in council chambers downtown. A public hearing is scheduled on the fees at 5 p.m.
The city is looking at the changes as the city evaluates pretreatment fees to keep contents of industrial waste in compliance with disposal.
The move is the result of the amount of ammonia leachate of ammonia from the waste hauled from Anderson County which is being taken to the City of Belton waste system which exceeds allowable levels, meaning the county will now take some of the waste to the City of Anderson. The city is considering charging fees to offset the costs of pretreatment of the waste by increasing surcharge fees to industries using the city’s pretreatment service. The increase would be passed along to the customers if approved.
If approved, industries in the pretreatment program would see a five cent increase, from 25 cents to 30 cents, per pound of industrial waste over the allowed thresholds for the following: Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Total Suspended Solids, Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen, and Total Phosphorous.
A hauling fee of $10 per 1,000 gallons of industrial waste in question is also proposed.
The city maintains the cost increases would offset costs of dealing with the industrial waste.
