Council to Discuss Roads Plan, Funding, Tuesday
Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer
Anderson County Council will discuss a new road plan for the 1,534 miles of county-owned roads as part of the meeting Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. in the historic courthouse downtown. Roads continue to be the top topic of discussion between council members and their constituents.
Anderson County Administrator Rusty Burns has repeatedly reminded citizens that the county is responsible for more roads than some small countries. The cost of repair/maintenance/replacement of a road is between $600,000-$1 million per mile, and the county needs close to $10 million annually to properly service all roads and bridges.
The new study will include evaluation of every mile of road and every bridge in the county.
That’s why council will also discuss the possibility of a referendum which would create a penny sales tax to fund roadwork to useful levels for the first time since before Home Rule. Voters would decide on the issue in November of 2024.
Also on Tuesday at the regular 6 p.m. recognitions meeting, council will honor the T.L. Hanna High School Boys Golf Team on winning the 2023 AAAAA High School State Championship.
