County in Critical Need of Election Workers
Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer
The Anderson County Board of Voter Registrations and Elections needs local citizens to help ensure the upcoming general November 5 election runs smoothly and efficiently.
There is a critical shortage of election workers, especially in Starr, Iva, Belton, Honea Path, lower Anderson and some rural areas.
With many who have served in as election workers for decades retiring, there are now many openings at precincts throughout the county.
Election workers are responsible for setting up polling stations, checking voter IDs, issuing ballots, and assisting voters as needed.
Training will be provided to all election workers and is scheduled for new workers Oct. 11-19. Workers will be paid for training, and election day work.
Election workers must be a registered voter in Anderson County or adjoining county, but can also work if aged 16 or 17.
The state compensates counties for poll worker wages. The state rate is $60 to attend training and $75 on Election Day, for a total of $135. Poll clerks, who lead each precinct and undergo more training, will get an additional $100. Some counties in South Carolina provide supplemental pay for election workers, but Anderson County does not.
