S.C. Education Chief says Literacy a Top Priority

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

South Carolina Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver said literacy issues are at the top of her list of priorities as she approaches the eight-months of her tenure in the job.

“We want to align students in South Carolina with the science of reading,” said Weaver, before speaking to a crowd of around 100 at the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce’s August Toast ‘N Topics meeting Thursday at Anderson University.

Weaver said she has been impressed with the front-line teachers and other employees as she has traveled the state during her first year.

She also discussed other short-term and long-term goals for the S.C. Department of Education as part of her presentation.
