School Dist. 1 Elementary School to Carry Historic Name

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

After a survey sent to all parents and the community, Anderson County School District 1 is naming the new elementary school as a salute to the community.

Oak Hill Elementary reflects suggestions from the survey and has historic ties to an Oak Hill School in the area in the 1930s. The school is slated to open in the fall of 2026.

The new school will be located at 250 Oak Road in Powdersville (corner of Elrod and Oak Road), and serve students and families in the Powdersville area. This additional school also aims to accommodate the growth experienced at Concrete Primary and Powdersville Elementary schools.

The name Oak Hill has ties to the community’s history, with documented photographs believed to be from the 1930s showing students once attended an Oak Hill School in the area. By selecting the name, the district hopes to pay homage to this legacy and honor the generations of students who walked its halls.

“We are very pleased that the school board has agreed to name our new school ‘Oak Hill Elementary,’” said Superintendent Robbie Binnicker. “This is a very fitting name that honors the former school located not far from the site of the new school as well as the students that once attended. A huge thank you to all of the parents and community members that submitted suggestions and recommendations for naming the new school. These suggestions were invaluable to the Board in making a final decision.”

The district is asking the community to share photos or artifacts from the former school to share them with Anderson District One via email to gambrellh@apps.anderson1.org, or by dropping them off or mailed to District Office, 801 N. Hamilton Street, Williamston, S.C. 29697.
