Dist. 5 Board to Discuss Use of New Weapons Detectors
Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer
The Anderson School District 5 Board of Trustees will discuss metal detectors and weapons detection systems as part of Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. meeting in the district office.
Last week the district installed the Evolv weapons-detection systems at T.L. Hanna and Westside High Schools.
The new $450,000 system is considered faster and more accurate than standard metal detectors, especially when detecting objects which could be a gun. School Resource Officers man the scanners.
The EVOLV system uses algorithm technology along with cameras to detect concealed weapons. It detects shapes, density, and location to provide the operator with a targeted search indicator. One key advantage of the EVOLV system is the ability for students to flow through its system at a normal pace while still providing accurate detection information.
The EVOLV system is also portable and weather-rated for outdoor use
The schools will also continue current safety precautions in addition to the new scanners.
The Greenville County School District began using three of the systems on a rotating basic at the start of the 2022-23 school year.
