Letter: Resolve to Protect Reproductive Rights Unshakable

Dear Anderson,

I am writing to highlight the profound impact and ongoing consequences that have unfolded in the Upstate since the unfortunate overturning of Roe v. Wade. Back in June 2022, when I was running as a candidate for State House, I proudly stood for women's rights and fought for their healthcare. However, since last year's shocking decision by the conservative United States Supreme Court justices to overturn Roe v. Wade, a wave of restrictive measures has threatened reproductive health access across the country, including here at home.

As we mark one year since the fall of Roe v. Wade this week, South Carolina remains the only state in the Southeast with accessible abortion care... thanks to a court challenge to our own recently passed extreme abortion ban.

While these state efforts are disheartening, it is troubling to witness the national push by Republicans to restrict abortion rights, with every 2024 Republican presidential candidate promoting an extreme anti-choice agenda. Nevertheless, I find solace in the fact that community advocates like WREN, leaders like the Sister Senators, and passionate individuals like ourselves stand as unwavering defenders of reproductive rights across South Carolina and our nation. In this critical moment, let us raise our voices with optimism and hope. Together, we can rally our community to stand strong against these radical abortion bans and declare that reproductive rights are fundamental and non-negotiable.

It may not be an election year, but our legislators still work for us! Even as we celebrate Pride Month, we embrace the intersectional spirit of inclusivity and justice for every South Carolinian. We channel our collective strength to ensure that every person has agency over their bodies and access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare. Despite the challenges we face, our shared determination can create a future where all individual rights are celebrated and protected.

It has been a year since the erosion of reproductive rights began, but our resolve remains unshakable. Together, we can safeguard and expand these essential rights for everyone. Join us in this vital endeavor as we tirelessly work to build a society where freedom, equality, and dignity flourish for all.

Yours optimistically,

Chris Salley /Chair, Anderson County Democrats
