1908 Piedmont YWCA to House New Museum
Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer
It sits on a hill near the middle of town, and like so many large houses still standing after more than 100 years, it has stories to tell.
But the Piedmont YWCA, built by the Piedmont Manufacturing Company in 1908 as a home for the single women working at the mill, will soon be a place to remember and encourage the building of community in Piedmont. Restoration is under way to build a museum to house the history - artifacts, research material, and stories about Piedmont - as the new home of the Piedmont Historical Preservation Society. The group already has mounds of materials that currently cannot be displayed and shared with the public.
Once the renovation is complete, the goal is to offer not only physical objects to display, but to digitize the records and publish the catalog online for researchers across the country. It also plans to serve school student groups and educators as they delve into local history topics.
