Anderson Courthouse Proceedings to Be Moved Due to Elevator Issues

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

Court activities are being moved from the Anderson County Courthouse to alternate locations beginning Monday, due to potentially faulty parts in the two elevators that serve the facility.

Thyssenkrupp, who upgraded the elevators recently, notified the county of the issue, and Anderson County officials met Friday to find alternative sites for all court activities, except for magistrate court. The issue could take up to four months to resolve. Safety features would prevent free fall of the elevators, but if the parts failed, the elevator cars could drop up to four feet before stopping.

In the interim, court proceedings will be moved to the historic courthouse, the Ronnie Townsend Building on North Main, the civic center, the county building at 1428 Pearman Dairy Rd, and other potential sites to be determined later.

“Our plans are for no court proceedings to miss a beat,” said Anderson County Administrator Rusty Burns, who praised efforts of officials, especially Clerk of Court C. Reena Thomason for the cooperative efforts in finding alternative court sites so quickly.

Those with scheduled court dates will be informed of changes of venue.
