When it comes to managing things during a crisis, the Anderson County Emergency Management Division is the best in South Carolina.

After a very challenging year, that included the first hurricane to reach the county in history, the S.C. Emergency Management Association has chosen Anderson County’s division as the top agency in the state for 2024.

It’s the first time Anderson Emergency Management has received the award.

“It’s a big deal for us, and everyone is excited,” said Anderson Emergency Management Director Josh Hawkins. “My staff really cares about Anderson County and wants what’s best for the community. It’s nice every now and then to get recognition for the hard work.”

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in September 2024, his team worked long hours to provide up-to-the-minute information, prioritizing the safety and well-being of the county, while coordinating a massive mobilization effort of resources between local, state and federal agencies. As part of this effort, they coordinated with the National Guard and set up easy to access water, meal and donation sites.

“Anderson County Council is pleased that our emergency management team is now recognized as the best in South Carolina,” said Anderson County Administrator Rusty Burns. “The director Josh Hawkins and his team are to be commended for their tremendous efforts during a challenging year.

Burns also said, the county is excited to see the award coming on the heels of Anderson County EMS being chosen the state’s top EMS System of the Year, and the Anderson County EMS Director Steve Kelly being chosen as EMS Director of the Year.

“These back-to-back honors exemplify the high level of work being done in our county,” said Burns.
