City Council Prepares for $5.8M Cater's Lake Upgrade

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

Anderson City Council discussed potential plans for significant upgrades at Cater’s Lake on Monday during a work session before the regular council meeting.

The estimated cost of the renovations, which would include walking trails, landscaping, environmentally friendly islands in the pond for the ducks/geese, a covered bridge architectural structure to improve visuals, additional areas for picnic tables and grassy play areas, is currently $5.8 million.

Under the current plan, the city is also working with the South Carolina Department of Transportation to potentially turn Hiawatha Drive into a cul-de-sac, to increase safety in the area as well.

Funding would come from adding to the bond issue the city is using as part of the funding for the total reinvention of Lindley Park, which is already well under way.

Council is expected to move ahead on the Cater’s lake project and if the projected schedule remains unchanged hold a final vote on the plan Oct. 28.

Cater’s Lake Proposed Improvements

Footbridge will likely be an architectural element, not an actual bridge.
