City Oks Development, Takes Initial Look at FY 24-25 Budget
Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer
A new planned development, including housing, is in the works for downtown Anderson after city council gave final approval Monday to rezone 3.5 acres on the southwestern corner of South Murray Avenue and West Franklin Street. The new designation also allows multi-family housing.
The potential development of the property has applied for tax credits for the project on the 11 parcels, and if approved, could begin construction in 2025, and be open within 12-15 months, according to City Administrator David McCuen.
The need for more housing near downtown, especially workforce housing, continues to grow, and the rezoning of the property hopes to help meet that need.
While details are still in the works, plans call for housing for 80 families with trees and other requirements set by the city’s landscape guidelines.
Council also held a work session on the fiscal year 2024-25 budget Monday, with discussion of the budget in name only. No numbers were released, but council members suggested no millage hike is expected.
