Dist. 5 Cross Country Center Finishes First Year a Winner

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

The new 27-acre Anderson School District Five Cross Country facility just completed its first season of competitions and area coaches are excited about its future.

The cross-country facility is part of a larger 87-acre YMCA Sports Complex which opened earlier this year and which includes not only new fields for sports, but the state-of-the-art cross-country area aimed at attracting regional meets for high schools and colleges/universities. The technoloty allows parents to track their children throughout the races.

The new tracks also offer improved safety, removing students who are cross-country runners from busy roads and highways where they were previously forced to train.

The district hopes the facility will attract large meets and continue to grow.

Kyle Newton, Assistant Superintendent for External Affairs / Chief Communications Officer for the district, said it is a premier facility that must be seen in person to fully appreciate.

The $4.7 million needed for constructing and setting up the cross-country center was provided by the penny sales tax for schools.
