Local Film Showing Spotlights Truth of Homelessness

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

As local groups work together to serve those who do not have permanent lodging in our area, a screening of the documentary “Americans with No Address” is set for Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Regal Starlight Theaters in Anderson. Limited tickets here.

Local sponsors, Hill Elective and Robert Rainey have paid to rent the theater for the event, which is limited to the first 200 who register for a free ticket. Tickets here. The Salvation Army of Anderson, Hope Missions of the Upstate, Family Promise, South Main Chapel & Mercy Center, The Lot Project, Asher House and the United Way of Anderson County after the film will briefly address efforts to help ease homelessness and find affordable housing in Anderson.

“It's a Hollywood’s attempt to capture four or five stories of homelessness that take a much more realistic approach than others I have seen,” said Dave Phillips, CEO and executive director of Hope Missions of the Upstate. Phillips, who read the book that inspired the documentary last year, said the story is compelling.

“Everything I am trying to do is soft hearts toward people experiencing homelessness,” said Phillips. “This (documentary) shows real people become homeless and real people can find their way out when someone comes alongside them.”

Maj. Joseph Irivin of the Salvation Army of Anderson said the event is aimed at boosting awareness of what is being done locally.

“My hope is to draw I supporters for all the local participating agencies,” said Irvin. “The documentary explores the human side of homelessness and show that homelessness can happen to anyone.”

The documentary team traveled across the country in a vintage tour bus interviewing people in 20 major cities across 18 states, including top experts on homelessness, CEOs and executive directors of local and national nonprofit organizations, and political leaders. They also interviewed individuals who have experienced or are currently experiencing homelessness.
