Mulch from Hurricane Debris Now Available

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

The thousands of Anderson County trees damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Helene are being recycled to create free mulch for citizens.

The months of cleanup are nearing an end, though a few areas are still being cleaned up in the county. Anderson County Solid Waste Director Greg Smith said his crews have been working seven days a week to manage the truckloads of organic waste.

Smith said 14.2 million pounds of debris has been collected and taken to the county’s Starr landfill so far. County residents can now schedule a time to pick up the free mulch, but are cautioned not to use the mulch around plants for six months due to high nitrogen content.

Residents can pick up the mulch for free. Due to the nitrogen in the mulch, officials said to not use it around plants for about six months, but you can use it right away

Mulch is available at the Starr landfill Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.-12 p.m.
