New SCDNR Law to Require Permit to Require Boating Safety Course

Observer Reports

Beginning Aug.18, those operating a watercraft in South Carolina born after July 1, 2007, will be required to pass an approved boating education course.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) will require proof of the education course for those in that age group before they are allowed to legally operate a boat, jet ski or any powered watercraft of 10 horsepower or more.

Officers will be given the leeway for a grace period as the new law goes into effect. Violations will bring fines of $50-$300.

Those born after July 1, 2007, who have earned a U.S. Coast Guard license or merchant mariner credential, nonresidents of the state with equivalent boating safety credentials from their state, anyone operating a rental boat with a temporary rental safety certificate, or those accompanied by a qualified boater over the age of 18.
