South Main Chapel & Mercy Center Celebrates 10 Years of Service
Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer
South Main Chapel and Mercy Center celebrated 10 years of service to the community at Anderson University Tuesday night, with tributes to both the ministry and those who have made the efforts possible over the past decade.
The church moved into the historic church on South Main Street, which had served as Orville United Methodist Church from 1900-2012, was in need of a lot of help to save the buildings and make use of them in the community once again.
A group of local citizens began meeting and from those get togethers a vision grew, one which was given focus after visiting Greenville’s Triune Mercy Center, which worked to meet the needs of the homeless and others in need while providing a diverse fellowship based around the church.
The United Way of Anderson and the United Methodist Church joined the effort and in June 2014, South Main Chapel and Mercy Center was born.
Today the church offers meals, clothes, health care, housing assistance and other services, as part of a mission which seeks to build a community that looks like the world around us.
