Dam/Footbridge Plan Could Link Piedmont to Brighter Future

A $9 million plan to restore the Piedmont footbridge and revitalize the area on both sides of the Saluda River for public use was presented Tuesday night in Piedmont, offering a vision for a future which could make Piedmont a tourist destination.

The proposal includes a new footbridge, playground and picnic area, natural park areas and paths, and public parking connecting both sides of the river.

But mill owners and bosses sought to prevent strikers from shutting down production, meeting strikers with rifles, shotguns, dynamite, clubs and tear gas. A machine gun nest on the roof of the mill jammed, or the number of dead could have been catastrophic for the Honea Path and Belton communities.

Rocksprings/Belton FD 9/11 Memorial Walk Set for Sunday

The Rocksprings Fire Department and Belton City Fire Department will host their annual 9/11 Memorial Walk Sunday beginning at 6 p.m.

The 2.5-mile walk will begin at Rocksprings Fire Department and end at the Belton City Fire Department where participants will gather for a brief service, which will include the ringing of the bell, a solemn tradition honoring the memory of the fallen.

Council to Choose 2 New Library Board Members Tuesday

Anderson County Council will choose two new members to serve on the library board as part of Tuesday’s meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the historic courthouse downtown.

Earlier this year, council gave final approval to expanding the current seven-member board, one appointed by each council member which governs the library. Some council members suggested the four-year appointments were of concern since council members are only elected to two-year terms, creating a slim chance that some council members might not get to name the representative from their district.

Roads Referendum Pivotal for Anderson County

A number of national studies suggests that well-maintained roads more than offset the cost of vehicle fees in savings on tires, alignments and other mechanical repairs caused by poor roads. Improperly maintained roads are also to blame for injuries and deaths in vehicle accidents on the road each year. The average annual savings for drivers on well-maintained roads is estimated at $591.

Celebrate Anderson Marks 25 Years with 2 Concerts/Fireworks Shows

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the event and will include Randy Houser on Saturday, and Ashley McBryde on Sunday. Both concerts are open to the public, but require a free ticket available at www.andersonevents.com. Organizers are expecting both events to reach capacity and encourage fans to get tickets early. Fireworks shows are scheduled each evening after the concert.

The weekend also includes hot air balloons from all over the nation as part of the Cancer Association of Anderson’s annual “Hot Air Affair” fundraiser event, which also aims to increase awareness of the mission of hope and support provided by the Cancer Association of Anderson.

Starr Residents Express Opposition to Massive Mobile Home Park

More than 300 citizens were on hand at the Starr Fire Department Tuesday night to express concerns about a potential 249-unit mobile home park which had been proposed for the Starr area. The developer, Cook Properties NY, submitted the proposal for 8010 S.C. 81 to the Anderson County Planning Commission (see map below) on July 29, and it became public in the weeks since, causing a flurry of complaints by citizens who live in the area.The area in question covers more than 70 acres, with 23 of those acres under the jurisdiction of the Town of Starr and the rest under ordinances of Anderson County.

City Oks Townhouses, Updates Shared Kitchen Fees

Anderson City Council gave final approval on Monday to the rezoning of 10 acres located at 110 Fairway Green off U.S. 29 South for 80 proposed townhouses. The townhouses will be a minimum of 1,500 square feet and the development will include sidewalks, a large common area and a pocket park.

S.C. Representative-Elect Blake Sanders, R-Dist. 9, has filed a countersuit against James Galyean, claiming that under SC Code § 15-36-10, also referred to as the South Carolina Frivolous Civil Proceeding Sanctions Act, “as this action is non-meritorious and Sanders seeks sanctions, including attorney’s fees and other relief the statute provides for and the court deems proper, at the appropriate juncture of this action.”
