City of Anderson Elects New Council Member

The City of Anderson elected a new council member on Tuesday, and three other city council incumbents were reelected to new terms. Voter turnout was light, with just over three percent of the eligible voters participating in the municipal elections.
Anderson Attorney Greg Steele defeated Bryce Nivens in the Seat 6 district race, which represents an area that stretches from West of Linley Park, through the Pope Drive community, across to Whitehall Avenue. Steele received 168 votes to Nivens 77 votes for the seat left open when Rick Laughridge stepped down after 16 years.
“I am honored that my neighbors have elected me to represent our neighborhood on Anderson City Council,” said Steele. “It was a tough fought campaign, and I congratulate Bryce Nivens on a well-run race. I hope to continue the legacy Rick Laughridge has paved as councilman for our district, and I will continue to put my neighbors needs first as I have done throughout my campaign. I still want to hear from my neighbors about what’s most important to them, so I encourage anyone in District 6 to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.”
Seat 2 Incumbent Luis Martinez II, Seat 4 Incumbent Tony Stewart and At-Large Seat 8 Incumbent Jeff Roberts, all unchallenged, held onto their seats on Tuesday.
Martinez won his second term with 78 votes, Stewart was reelected to his sixth term with 30 votes, and Roberts was reelected to serve a fourth term with 364 votes. The At-Large Seat 8 also received a total of 138 write-in votes.
City council members serve four-year terms, and election for the seats are staggered.
